Why Saul Niguez would be a brilliant signing for Manchester United

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will receive the necessary backing to make three big transfers for Manchester United during the January transfer window.

The report says Ed Woodward and club owners the Glazers are more than willing to get behind Solskjaer in the transfer market to the point that he can really splash the cash to build on the club’s recent successes against Tottenham and Manchester City respectively.

The three names that have been mentioned are Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, Red Bull Salzburg teenage sensation Erling Braut Haaland and Ajax star Donny van de Beek.

Saul Niguez, 25, is considered to be indispensable to manager Diego Simeone, having made over 250 appearances for Atletico Madrid. He signed an eight-year contract before the start of the 2018-19 season, as Simeone tried to keep hold of his first-team squad.

With Atletico struggling in the La Liga, picking up just one win the last six games, United must test the Spanish club’s resolve for Saul Niguez.

This season has shown that Manchester United lack quality depth in the midfield, especially with Paul Pogba’s ongoing injury absence. It is important the club address this and sign a new midfielder, even though Scott McTominay and Fred have started building a partnership in the middle of the park of late and Pogba is closing on a return.

A player in the ilk of Saul would simply be perfect for Solskjaer’s United. The Spaniard is a versatile player who can play in various positions across the midfield and at left-back if required.

The Elche-born star is constantly busy when he’s out on the pitch, chasing down the opposition, putting his foot in, and always looking to make something happen.

In addition to being defensively strong, the 25-year-old is fantastic on the ball, capable of picking a pass in the final third and scoring screamers from outside the box. As per WhoScored, Saul has registered 1.3 shots per game, 0.4 key passes, 2.1 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.8 clearances in the La Liga.

Verdict

At 25, Saul is at an ideal age to help lead this young United team and take them to the next level. His experience could be vital in improving a team that can challenge for the Premier League and Champions League next season.
