According to a report in Sun Football, Premier League giants Manchester United are monitoring Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves ahead of potentially making a move in the summer. (h/t Birmingham Mail)
The Portuguese international has been a massive hit in his first season in the Premier League, having led the Old Gold to a Championship title last season.
As per the report, the 21-year-old is also a transfer target for United’s noisy neighbours Manchester City. The only thing that could hinder the Red Devils making a bid is the £100m price tag of the player. (Sun)
However, here’s why the Old Trafford-based club should break their bank and sign Ruben Neves in the summer:
As of now, Manchester United are under period of resurgence under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Since the departure of Jose Mourinho, they have been in great form in the league and also in the FA Cup by making progress on both fronts.
The 4-3-3 formation is certainly in the way the Norwegian would have wanted, probably to get the best out his players in the current scheme of things.
While that system allows Paul Pogba to have a free role in midfield, the front three can exchange positions and become a threat with pace and direct running.
The other two midfielders Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic generally play the conservative role, mopping up the lose balls and keeping the team on the front foot.
Though, all those are positive things with the way this team is playing, they would be happy to get more depth in the midfield department.
United have sold Marouane Fellaini, while Fred and Andreas Pereira haven’t shown enough to stake their claim in the first-choice eleven. Hence, signing someone of Ruben Neves’ quality should add much-needed strength in depth to this squad.
Manchester United should be aiming to improve their current squad if they are to challenge for the league next season. There are couple of areas in which investment need to be done – midfield and defence.
Getting Neves across the line at Old Trafford would mean they will have a player who can be a class-act with the ball and exhibit work-rate without it. All in all, the 21-year-old would enhance the quality of United’s midfield two-fold.
