With their race for the top four officially over, it means that Manchester United will play Europa League football once again next season. The Red Devils haven’t had the best season so far and while they believed appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could change things, it hasn’t gone to plan.
That being said, you cannot fault the Norwegian for what he has done so far, with the squad that he does have.
He somehow managed to pull them back into contention for the top four after a rather incredible two months with the club before times changed. The rot from Jose Mourinho’s era had set in and that hump was far too much to jump over.
It’s why the Red Devils have struggled over the last few odd weeks. But during that time, there have been a few players that have done relatively well and playmaker Juan Mata is easily on that list.
The £140,000-a-week Spaniard, despite his contract winding down at the end of the season, has been at his very best over the last few months. He’s among the many players that Solskjaer has managed to reignite and among the few that have continued their form.
While that alone shouldn’t be a reason for the Red Devils to offer him a new deal, the fact that he’s seriously attracting interest from Spain and England does pose a problem (Mirror).
With his contract winding down, the only thing that Manchester United can do to keep the attacking midfielder is to offer him a new deal. Juan Mata is one of the few players in the Manchester United squad who can offer creativity.
As one of the last remaining out-and-out number 10s in the world, the 31-year-old is very experienced. Add that to his guile, ability to find space in and around the box and more importantly, the fact that he can net an average of 5 goals a season since moving to the club.
While that isn’t a world-class tally, it’s one that can be very useful towards the fag end of the season.

Juan Mata is a fan favourite and a big part of the modern Manchester United post Sir Alex Ferguson’s era. The 31-year-old still has a lot to offer and the Red Devils clearly believe as much with a deal on the table (Sky Sports).
However, they need to convince the Spaniard to stay at the club and give him what he wants.
