Manchester United opinion: Should the Red Devils sign Bruno Fernandes?

According to a report from Portuguese publication A Bola, Manchester United are in pole position to sign Sporting Lisbon’s playmaker Bruno Fernandes.

The report reveals that the Red Devils have already developed informal contacts to sign the Portuguese international but they face competition from another top European club.

Italian giants AC Milan are also interested in Fernandes, according to the report but the Red Devils have the upper hand in the pursuit of the 24-year old.

Fernandes has a mammoth release clause of €100million, which is the highest in the Sporting Lisbon squad and this could prove to be a stumbling block for Milan.

Manchester United are in need of a midfielder since Juan Mata and Ander Herrera’s contracts with the club come to an end in the summer. Paul Pogba has also been linked with Real Madrid.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should look to make a statement in his first transfer window as Manchester United’s permanent manager and bringing Bruno Fernandes to Old Trafford will be a massive one.

The 24-year-old has had an incredible season for Sporting Lisbon, having scored a stunning 27 goals and 15 assists in 46 games so far this season. Sporting are currently 3rd in the Liga NOS and a massive reason for that has been Fernandes’ form.

Naturally an attacking midfielder, Fernandes has played in a variety of positions this season. He has been used in a number 8 position, on the left wing and even as a second striker by Marcel Keizer and has been a star in each of those positions.

Fernandes is, by all means, a complete midfielder. The Portuguese international has a brilliant eye for a pass and is capable of taking the opposing defence out of the game with a single pass.

He is a calm presence in the middle of the park and is capable of retaining the ball under enormous pressure.

The former Sampdoria man has a brilliant right foot too and is capable of having a pop at goal from a long way out. Fernandes has the rare ability of being able to use both his power as well as finesse to score and he is incredibly composed in front of goal.

Despite only being 5f 10in tall, Fernandes is incredibly strong and uses his low centre of gravity to twist and turn around the opponent to get away from them. His close control is a joy to watch and he would be a perfect fit for a club like Manchester United.

Conclusion

Manchester United’s midfield will receive a massive boost with the addition of Bruno Fernandes in the summer and he would even chip in with a number of goals from the midfield, which would certainly take the pressure off their strikers.

Fernandes’ versatility will open up a wide range of options for Solskjaer and his ability to adapt to more than one position in a single game will be of massive help. United should not hesitate to make a move for the 24-year old in the summer.
