Man United beating Juventus to sign this 23-year-old Ligue 1 hotshot in January would be a statement of intent from Mourinho

Why Man United must beat Juventus to sign Adrien Rabiot in January

According to a report from the Sport, Paris Saint-Germain are planning to sell midfielder Adrien Rabiot in January.

The Frenchman, 23, still hasn’t signed a new deal with PSG and from January will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs regarding a transfer in summer.

The report claims Serie A champions Juventus are interested in Adrien Rabiot and could sign him on a cut-price deal in January itself rather wait until summer to swoop him for free. But Manchester United must rival Juventus for the midfielder’s signature in the New Year.

Adrien Rabiot

Manchester United have been a subject of criticism from all corners of the world following their poor performances this season.

The Reds have not put in consistent displays that see them a long way from the top four. In the Premier League, they have managed only eight home goals — only five other teams have scored less. That should be a big concern for Jose Mourinho, particularly with the team filled with a galaxy of richly talented attacking players.

While much of the blame for not scoring goals consistently should go to the forwards, one cannot spare the midfielders for not providing enough service for the flair players.

In Paul Pogba, United have one of the best central midfielders across Europe but the Frenchman continues to blow hot and cold. The Red Devils shelled out a lot of money on Fred in summer, yet Mourinho has preferred Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini ahead of the diminutive Brazilian.

One can only praise Fellaini for everything he has done but not Matic, who has been very poor since the start of the 2018/19 campaign. The Serbian has looked off the pace and lacked defensive diligence for which he is renowned, and yet Mourinho has constantly put faith in the 30-year-old.

With Matic having turned 30, United could use another youthful and more mobile option in the centre alongside the likes of Pogba and Fred.

Rabiot, 23, would fit that bill. The Frenchman is adept at cutting out attacks with his quick anticipation and carrying the ball forward with energy and purpose. He is an excellent distributor and can contribute a lot to United’s build-up play, which has been very passive and slow this term.

Rabiot not only can pick out a pass but also has the technical ability to beat players in the centre of the park and move the team forward. The French international has the ability to dictate the tempo of the game and his commanding presence in the midfield could propel the Red Devils to greater heights.

Despite being only 23, Rabiot has gained volumes of experience in Europe and his ability could make him a valuable asset for United. Hence, United must test PSG’s resolve with an audacious bid in January.
