Man City shelling out £50m for this 21-year-old would be a shrewd move in wake of Benjamin Mendy’s injury

Manchester City should definitely make the move for Ben Chilwell

According to the Mirror, Manchester City are interested in signing Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell. The Champions are ready to shell out £50 million for the English fullback who has made massive strides this season.

Chilwell has broken into the first team under Claude Puel this season and has by far been their most consistent defender in the team. The 21-year-old did sign a new contract just two months ago but that hasn’t stopped the Cityzens from showing interest.

Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy is currently sidelined due to an injury and that has been the case over the last year. He barely played a part in City’s title-winning campaign last time out, neither did he play a role for France in the World Cup.

Ben Chilwell

The fullback started this season in fine form, delivering assists on a regular basis but he is once again out injured for the second time this season. That is why Manchester City should definitely make the move for Ben Chilwell.

Fabian Delph has done well in Mendy’s place but the English midfielder doesn’t possess the offensive output needed to thrive in Guardiola’s system. This is where Chilwell comes in. The 21-year-old is superb marauding forward and loves to take on defenders down the wing.

He has picked up 1 assist in 16 league appearances this season but that is only due to the poor finishing from the strikers in the final third. Chilwell has always put in excellent shifts at the back and up front. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)

The youngster possesses immense work rate and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. A quality that will certainly bode well under Pep Guardiola. He has supplied 77 crosses across his 16 games this season. The likes of Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling will thrive off his supply from down the left-wing. Ben Chilwell

Chilwell’s inswinging crosses into the box are deadly and are meant to be finished. He is also defensively strong and is a hard man to beat at the back, which is something Benjamin Mendy lacks. The Frenchman is often caught out of position and beaten by the opposition attackers. Chilwell, on the other hand, is a lot more aware in defence and times his runs well.

Manchester City should definitely make the move for Ben Chilwell in January. The Foxes will surely play hardball with the Cityzens given they will not want to lose one of their top assets. But Manchester City must do everything in their power to bring in the left-back.
