Why Man City are right in handing a new contract to Leroy Sane

According to the Sun, Premier League champions Manchester City are planning fresh contract extension talks with German winger Leroy Sane. The player has had a tough start to the season, which was preceded by him being axed from the World Cup squad during the summer.

The report says that there were questions ringing around the 22-year-old’s attitude and willingness to play the game. It led to City boss Pep Guardiola dropping him for the first few games of the season.

However, as it turned out, Sane has switched his fortunes around by coming back into form following a tough summer. He is slowly getting back to his best after a disturbing first month of the campaign.

The Cityzens are on top of the league after eight games and are looking good to defend their title. The squad depth they possess is probably the best in Europe and Pep uses that to full extent because of his high-intensity tactical football.

Leroy Sane

Sane played a big part last season and is expected to continue doing well for the team. The German scored 10 goals and provided 15 assists in 32 league appearances last year. Hence, it is pretty clear that his pace and direct running from the left wing is more than useful to the team.

Sane suits the Pep way

Given the way Guardiola likes to play his football, the utilisation of wingers is an important feature of the game. The Spaniard plays a 4-3-3 with wingers who can stay as wide as possible and hug the touchline. This forces the opposition stretch at all times, which gives ample time to midfield creators.

On the flip side, if the opponents concentrate on defending their box, then the likes of Sane and Sterling will have acres of space in the wide areas.

Therefore, from a tactical perspective, Leroy Sane is just as important to the manager as any other player. If last season was any evidence of how things can work, the German wouldn’t take time to be a key player for his country as well.

Verdict

The 22-year-old’s contract does not run out until the summer of 2021, with terms of £65,000-a-week. Yet, he wants improved terms after helping the team reach new heights last season. Truth be told, he deserves that and the club should provide it as soon as possible.
