Manchester City opinion: Manchester City should keep Sane

Leroy Sane has been linked with an exit from Manchester City all summer and Bayern Munich have shown great desire to rebuild their team with Sane as the poster boy for their new era. Pep Guardiola has stated Sane’s importance to City and the ball’s in Sane’s court at the moment.

Sane joined City with Guardiola from the Bundesliga in the 2016/17 season and has been very successful in his short time and has made himself one of the best wingers in the world in that time. What makes Sane stand out is that he’s a throwback to the wingers from the past.

Sane has blistering pace and bombs down the left-wing in a manner quite similar to Ryan Giggs in his prime. With more clubs using inside forwards on the wing and using their full-backs for the width, players like Sane aren’t as common as they used to be.

He is an extremely creative player, amazing dribbler and is very hard to defend against because of his body feints. However, Pep Guardiola preferred the likes of Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva in the wide areas in the second half of the season and in a side like City with so much depth, a starting place has to be earned and can’t be guaranteed at all times.

However, it cannot be emphasized enough how important Sane is to Manchester City. He scored the winners against Liverpool and Manchester United last season to show his ability on the biggest of stages as well.

With the likes of Vincent Komapany and Fabian Delph leaving, some senior figures have left the club and it is important to keep a hold of the players, who have been at the heart of City’s domination in the last two seasons.

Guardiola has achieved pretty much everything that he set out to achieve with City – barring the Champions League – and it is important that he keep Sane in the side.

There are other senior players like David Silva, Fernandinho and Sergio Aguero, who have been outstanding over the best part of the last decade but are now heading into their finals years.

It wouldn’t come as a complete surprise if there are diminishing returns in their performances next season, which is why it’s important that City hold onto the players who are next in line to fill their shoes. Sane is one of them and City must do everything to convince him to stay.
