Liverpool’s threadbare goalkeeping unit would receive a boost if they sign this Dutch ace for free

Why Liverpool should sign Michael Vorm for free

Liverpool are down to their bare bones regarding goalkeeping options at the club.

Several youngsters are injured or are returning from a problem while No.1 keeper Alisson is out for a few weeks with a calf problem.

Adrian has featured in their previous two games, but the Spaniard suffered an ankle injury after the UEFA Super Cup final.

Andy Lonergan, a veteran, was brought in recently, but Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, John Achterberg claimed the Reds have spoken about signing Michel Vorm.

Achterberg spoke about Vorm to NOS (h/t Liverpool Echo) but also played up two players at the club:

“A good third goalie at a top club is not a superfluous luxury, I have always said this.

“Michel Vorm’s arrival has been discussed.”

“Lonergan has more than 250 matches at Championship level experience, not to be underestimated.

“And it’s not for nothing that Kelleher is Ireland’s youth international.”

Vorm made a name for himself at Swansea before joining Tottenham. The Dutch keeper became a free agent once his contract expired at Spurs in the summer.

A great option for Liverpool to have on their books

The Dutch keeper was one of Swansea’s stars when they gained promotion to the Premier League and recorded 31 clean sheets from 102 games in the competition.

Adrian has more clean sheets with 35, however, he has achieved them from 127 games, which is slightly poorer than Vorm’s record.

Vorm would provide more quality competition to Alisson and Adrian, and the Dutchman is available on a free.

The Reds cannot sign a top keeper as they have Alisson on their books, but they could do with Vorm joining on a short-term deal.

The Champions League holders could take a risk by playing one of their younger keepers should Adrian and Lonergan pick up injuries, however, an experienced option would fare better under pressure.

Liverpool have already seen two of their keepers pick up freak injuries this season, and they should not take risks for the remainder of the season.

Vorm is an experienced Premier League keeper and having him on the books isn’t a bad option for the Reds.
