Daniel Sturridge vs Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Should Liverpool Replace The Englishman With Gabon Star?

Daniel Sturridge has been linked with an exit from Liverpool for quite some time now but if latest reports are to be believed, the Reds could be interested in bringing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Anfield. The Borussia Dortmund frontman is being targeted to replace Sturridge, who is likely to prefer leaving Liverpool due to a severe lack of game time. Jurgen Klopp has worked with Aubameyang before at Dortmund, making it quite likely for the player to reunite with his former manager.

The arrival of Roberto Firmino jeopardised Sturridge’s chances of getting selected in the first-team. His injuries and inconsistent form further compounded Klopp’s decision to keep him out and he has failed to establish himself in the team ever since. Hence, a move out of the club could benefit him in his quest to clock regular minutes while he’d also develop his own career and skills. If that were to happen though, Klopp could bring Aubameyang to the club.

If Liverpool splash out money to sign the player, they could potentially forge one of the strongest attacks in Europe. The Reds already boast of a pretty impressive attack with the likes of Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho in their ranks. Adding Aubameyang to that list could solidify Liverpool’s chances. But what do the numbers say about Sturridge and Aubameyang? Let’s take a look.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Daniel Sturridge vs Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Sturridge has appeared 13 times for Liverpool so far this season but he has only spent 496 minutes on the field. And yet, he has managed to score 3 goals and 2 assists while averaging 1.8 shots per game. He has a pass success-rate of 83.1% and wins about 0.2 aerial duels on an average. He has not laid his hands on any Man of The Match awards this season.

Aubameyang, on the other hand, has appeared 17 times for Dortmund and has spent 1507 minutes on the field. During the process, he has scored 13 goals and 2 assists. He has picked up a red card and averages 3.9 shots per game. His pass success-rate stands at a modest 76.6% and he wins about 1.4 aerial battles per game. He has also picked up 2 Man of The Match awards so far this season.

Verdict

As the numbers suggest, Aubameyang does seem like a better option. One might argue that Sturridge barely received enough game time but even their style and approach to the game varies in a sense where the Dortmund man seems more suitable to Klopp’s tactics. Hence, if Sturridge were to leave, Klopp could benefit by signing the Gabon superstar.
