Liverpool’s back-line would become the best in Europe if they land Klopp’s former protege in the summer

Liverpool Opinion – Should the Reds sign Matthias Ginter?

According to a report in Daily Star, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Matthias Ginter.

The duo has worked together before at Dortmund, when Klopp signed the player for £8m. And now the gaffer is keen to reunite with the 22-year-old (h/t Calciomercato).

As per the report, Joel Matip could be on his way out of Anfield, paving a path for Ginter. Arsenal and Tottenham are also keeping close tabs on the German, hence, we could see a bidding war between the clubs in the summer transfer window.

Here’s why Liverpool should sign the centre-back:

Depth in quality is what Liverpool need

Liverpool are on top of the Premier League table and boast the best defensive record in the division. They have only conceded 15 goals in 28 games so far, which is remarkable for a team that was defensively weak not long ago.

The arrivals of Alisson Becker in goal and Virgil van Dijk in defence has galvanised the whole unit. Joe Gomez was doing a fantastic job alongside the Dutchman until he got injured. Now, Matip has done well in the past month or so.

While a good defensive record calls for stability in that department, the Reds have centre-backs who are constantly injury-prone – namely Dejan Lovren.

Virgil van Dijk

The Croat was supposed to be the one challenging for a spot with Gomez to partner van Dijk. But he has missed a lot of games, not just in the past month, but since his arrival at the club.

Hence, it makes sense for the club to offload the World Cup runner-up and replace him with a young talent who can be available to the manager when required and actually challenge for a place in the team.

Matthias Ginter could be that man for the Reds. The German is a centre-back but can ply his trade in defensive midfield and at right-back. Hence, he would be an ideal addition to the squad.

The 22-year-old can be a perfect utility player in the squad. Klopp is a type of manager who offers opportunity to players if they do well. Ginter could profit from that and enhance his reputation at such a big club.

Conclusion

Looking at it from the outside, Ginter to Liverpool seems like a perfect move for the player and also for the club. The past experience of working together would help the player understand the basic philosophy of the gaffer.
