Liverpool would themselves a huge favour by reviving interest in this 26-year-old Eredivisie star in January

Why Liverpool should make a move for Hakim Ziyech in January

Liverpool might have won the Champions League in June but their spending was nothing compared to some of the other teams in the Premier League.

The Reds only signed three players in the summer with two of them being teenagers. Adrian was Simon Mignolet’s replacement with the Spaniard joining on a free.

Liverpool then signed Andy Lonergan on a deal after Alisson picked up an injury after the season began, but it has been a low-key summer for the Reds.

However, they were linked with Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech in the summer, according to the Independent.

The Morocco international was one of the stars in Ajax’s campaign last season but remained with the club with only Sevilla making an offer (h/t Independent).

The report adds that Ziyech will remain with Ajax till next summer in hopes of landing a move to a big club, but Liverpool should make a move in the winter window.

Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg were the two teens to join the Reds in the summer, and it is unlikely that they will play regularly this season.

The Reds have Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri and Rhian Brewster on their books, and the trio will provide cover for Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino this season.

However, the likes of Origi and Brewster haven’t delivered consistently as the 26-year-old Ziyech has.

The Moroccan can play in several positions in the attack or midfield and would provide cover for many stars.

Hakim Ziyech

Ziyech has already scored two goals and provided an assist for Ajax in the league this season, and was incredible in the previous campaign.

The 26-year-old bagged 16 goals and provided 13 assists in the Eredivisie last season, and the Reds could use someone of his ability in the team.

Liverpool can sign players once the winter window opens, and they should target Ziyech. The Ajax star could be the X-factor for the Reds as they hunt for their first Premier League title.

The Moroccan wouldn’t start ahead of the likes of Salah or Mane, but he could do a great job coming off the bench.

Liverpool also have several competitions to play in this season, and adding a quality player such as Ziyech would allow Klopp to rest his best attackers.

The Reds could end up playing extra games if they reach the latter stages of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Liverpool have a great starting XI but they need more quality attackers on the bench.

Verdict

Liverpool saved a lot of money by not spending in the summer but should be more active in the winter window.

Jurgen Klopp hasn’t made major winter signings since taking over at Anfield, but Ziyech could be a smart signing for the Reds in January.
