After failing to bring Kyriakos Papadopoulos from Schalke, Rodgers has now targeted PSG defender Mamadou Sakho for an approximate £8m bid. Here we discuss three reasons why it is vital for Liverpool to go all out for Sakho and make him the heart of central defence.
Experience
The 23-year old Sakho has played for five years in the PSG first team and has appeared in 151 matches. For a club like Liverpool, whose base has been made my young players, 151 matches is a lot and could certainly add some quality experience to the side. He also has international experience, playing for the French national team for 15 times. This should go on to help Liverpool and add a lot of value to their backline. Typically a left-footed player, Sakho can be slotted in at left-back as well which solves the problem of Jose Enrique’s first team competition.
Finance
Liverpool cannot possibly get players who are worth a lot of money, for the fragile state of their finances. The club is hugely debt ridden and they are gathering as much money as they can for upgrading their squad in the forward line. In such a scenario, getting a player of Sakho’s quality for £8m, is definitely a steal and Liverpool should not hesitate about going for that player. Touted as the next best thing in French football, Sakho’s progress has somewhat been marred by the arrival of big name players. Unpredictable circumstances
Martin Skrtel is still undecided about his future, Sabastian Coates may go out of the club as soon as he gets the opportunity. The only reliable players in the Liverpool backline are Kolo Toure and Daniel Agger. Barcelona on the other hand are also making a bid for Agger, and although Liverpool are adamant not to sell Agger, the team would really be in trouble if the Dane moves out of the club.
