Liverpool FC Opinion: Should the Reds sign Tom Heaton?

According to a report from MirrorLiverpool are interested in signing Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton, as Jurgen Klopp eyes a solid back-up to Alisson Becker.

Heaton, who is also wanted by newly promoted Aston Villa, (h/t The Sun) is in the final year of his contract at Turf Moor.

Will Heaton be a good signing for Liverpool?

The Clarets No.1 has been serving for the club for over seven seasons, playing around 200 matches.

Despite being a staple for the English club for the first five seasons, the 33-year-old’s playing time has reduced in the last two seasons owing to injury woes. In his stead, Joe Hart took over the goalkeeping duties.

When the Clarets often fluctuated between promotion and relegation in the early years, Heaton was absolutely in his prime, getting named in the PFA Championship Team of Year in the 2015-16 campaign.

He was also one of the stand-by options for Jordan Pickford in the UEFA Nations League, where the Three Lions bagged the third spot.

Having mainly featured for the Clarets in the final phase of the Premier League the last term, Heaton managed to keep 4 clean sheets and conceded 27 goals while helping his side finish 15th in the table, thus avoiding relegation narrowly.

Elsewhere at Anfield, Becker had a wonderful debut campaign with the Reds, winning the UCL trophy and the Copa America with Brazil.

Besides that, the 26-year-old was the highest clean sheet-holder in three different competitions, making him one of the successful shot-stoppers of the season.

Meanwhile, his backup Simon Mignolet was largely dormant throughout the season. The Belgian keeper barely featured for the Reds with just two appearances and both of them coming in the FA Cup and the EFL.

To add insult to the injury, Mignolet did a Karius-Esque howler in the pre-season friendlies against Sporting Lisbon.

While the 33-year-old appears to be at a low ebb, the Reds should bring on Heaton as the new second-string for Becker.

Unlike Mignolet, Heaton has enjoyed more minutes over the past few seasons and his vast experience with English football would be of greater use to the former Dortmund manager.

Final Verdict

The Reds can opt for the services of the Clarets goalkeeper and should try to take the burden off the Brazilian No.1
