Liverpool FC Opinion: Why shouldn’t Liverpool sign Andy Lonergan?

According to a report from The Hartlepool Mail, Liverpool are set to sign free agent Andy Lonergan, with the report claiming that the 35-year-old has been called up for the pre-season tour in the United States.

The report also adds that the former Leeds United man would participate in all the friendlies in the coming weeks. (h/t The Hartlepool Mail)

Primary choice Alisson Becker is yet to make his return next month while Simon Mignolet is intermittently acting as the No. 1 under Jurgen Klopp.

Signing Lonergan would be a big mistake by the Reds

The Englishman became a free agent at the end of the previous season after playing few games on loan at Rochdale from Middlesbrough, who decided to cut off his deal.

Lonergan is highly known for his career with Preston for around 11 years. He also had his short spells with Fulham and Wolves.

Despite being vastly experienced, Lonergan would end up being nothing but a misfit, even if they sign him on a loan.

The Reds are currently overwhelmed with a myriad of shot-stoppers in the locker, including the likes of Caoimhin Kelleher, Vitezslav Jaros and Kamil Grabara.

Simon Mignolet

With that being said, the former Preston North End keeper would be an overburden for the Reds.

At the same time, Lonergan’s chances of playing for the main team is completely implausible, as there are many of them clearly above his ranks.

Final Verdict

The Reds are yet to get things running in the current transfer window and signing goalkeepers is certainly not a priority. Brazilian shot-stopper Becker ended a great campaign with two silverware, which is the Champions League and the Copa America.

It goes without saying that he would be the undisputable No.1 for the upcoming season. Even in the events of his absence, there are plenty of options to provide cover for him.
