Liverpool Opinion: Three left-backs Liverpool should consider signing this season

Liverpool’s impact in the current transfer window isn’t as good as they had in the Champions League last term. 

While there isn’t need for a major squad overhaul, Jurgen Klopp has to strengthen certain areas on the field and one such position is the left-back.

Andrew Robertson has ingrained his name as one of the hottest full-backs in Europe in recent times. His contributions to the Reds’ fairytale run in the UCL the last term is nothing less than miraculous. The Scotsman racked up an incredible assist tally of 13 in all competitions.

However, Alberto Moreno, the Reds’ second-choice, has finally parted his ways with the club to join Villareal.

Given this, the former Dortmund manager has to look out for a top-quality left-back, who can play second-fiddle to the hardworking Robertson.

Philipp Max

The Augsburg defender is the transfer subject of  Barcelona in recent times, while Liverpool have been keeping tabs on him for a long time. (h/t The Sun)

The 25-year-old has now become a more promising full-back in the Bundesliga, despite Augsburg’s failures to work as a unit over the course.

More Like Robertson, Max is quite intense in the attacking third which can be seen through his assists tally of 20 in the last two seasons. He also averaged 2 key passes per game, slightly higher than Robertson’s 1.4.

The intriguing fact is that Max was able to achieve the aforementioned stats in a less-competent side like Augsburg.

With that being said, the Reds can highly benefit from the German defender, whose versatility to play anywhere along the left flank comes as an added advantage.

Junior Firpo

One of the hottest commodities in Europe at present, Firpo is on the transfer radar of Tottenham, Barcelona and the Reds have also shown their interest. (h/t Independent)

The Real Betis youngster had an excellent run in the La Liga last season, racking up 5 goals and 7 assists. He was also part of Spain’s national team that lifted the Euro U21 trophy last month.

The 20-year-old’s stats from last season are nothing sort of impressive, as he held a pass success percentage of 82, much higher than his peers in the La Liga. He also recorded a far-better defensive record (with Spain’s U21 side) of 1.6 tackles and 3.7 clearances.

Firpo is highly credited for his sublime dribbling skills and his versatility to play in the middle and high up the left flank.

And the addition of the La Liga prospect would raise the stakes for the former Hull City man at Anfield and the Reds would also have a long-term player at hand.

Adam Lewis

One of the options off the shelf for the Reds is their reserves player Adam Lewis. 

The 19-year-old enjoyed a great season with the U23 side, as well as in the UEFA Youth League, racking up a goal and 7 assists in the process while garnering 5 goals and 12 assists in the 2017/18 season.

The English prospect has shown that he is ready for the main team and Klopp should consider him as the long-time successor of Robertson.
