Why Liverpool should sign Dael Fry from Middlesbrough

According to a report in Hartlepool Mail, Premier League giants Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Middlesbrough centre-back Dael Fry. The 21-year-old is a famous player at the Riverside after coming through the Boro academy and impressing since starting for the senior team.

Fry has started 10 of the 17 league games and is doing well at the heart of Tony Pulis’ defence. And Jurgen Klopp’s men are monitoring his progress closely. The Reds scouts have watched him around six times this season.

While Middlesbrough would be looking to keep one of their home-grown assets, especially after selling Ben Gibson to Burnley, Liverpool should take more interest and sign the centre-back sooner than later:

Liverpool’s need of a centre-back for cup games

The Reds have Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as the first-choice centre-back partnership, with Dejan Lovren fighting it out for a place with the latter.

Joel Matip, who has had problems with injuries in the past few months, is down the pecking order at the moment. As a result, he is not able to play games regularly and gain match fitness.

The last season’s Champions League runners-up went out very early in the EFL Cup, however, they would be aiming to do better in the FA Cup. And for these games, Klopp would rotate his first-choice eleven and field the fringe players.

But with what we have seen of Matip thus far, he hasn’t been secure at the back. Hence, it will make sense if Liverpool sign a young centre-back like Dael Fry for these cup games and then develop him to become a regular starter at Anfield.

The 21-year-old possesses the qualities to be a world-class centre-back in the coming years. He is physically strong and has great game-reading ability, something which is vital for a centre-back.

From his point of view, if a club of Liverpool’s stature comes calling, there is no turning back. He can enhance his prominence as a player under Jurgen Klopp and develop with some of the best players in world football. Consequently, he can show his talent and impress the manager.

Perusing the current situation at Anfield, the Reds are not desperately in need of a centre-back, however, it would be better if they get someone young and groom him to become one of the best.
