Liverpool opinion: Reds should revive their interest in Lloyd Kelly

The signing of Andy Robertson last summer from Hull City has proved to a brilliant bit of business by Liverpool.

The full-back’s performances this campaign have been hugely overshadowed by Virgil van Dijk’s masterclass in the heart of the Reds’ defence but Robertson deserves a lot more credit than he has received this campaign.

Robertson’s understudy Alberto Moreno is expected to leave Anfield after 5 years at the club once his contract expires this summer. The Reds will be left with no natural left-back following the Spaniard’s departure and will have to address the possibility of reinforcements in the summer.

The Reds should revive their previous interest in Bristol City’s highly rated left-back Lloyd Kelly and bring him in to provide support and learn from Robertson this summer. The 20-year old was heavily linked (h/t Daily Star) with a move to Jurgen Klopp’s side in January but a move failed to materialise.

Kelly, who is naturally a left-back, has featured in central defence at times this season. His versatility at such a young age is a huge trait to possess, which will benefit him hugely in the coming years.

The 20-year-old is rapid with or without the ball and has the ability to take on opposition defenders to get to the by-line. His dribbling skills help him evade tackles from the opposition and once he gets a yard of space on the flank, he has the ability to whip in a very good cross.

Very much like most young full-backs, Kelly is highly attack-minded and always looks to make himself available in the wide areas of the pitch. The youngster boasts of a very impressive first touch and is often seen plucking balls off thin air.

In his own half, Kelly is highly intelligent and always has his head up. His eye for a pass, be it long or short, is very good and he possesses the ability to set a teammate through on goal from a deeper area.

Kelly has massive potential in his game but is in no way a finished product. The 20-year-old still has a ton of areas in his game that he needs to improve and under Jurgen Klopp, he will do just that. Kelly can also learn an awful lot from Andy Robertson, who has developed his game massively over the years.

Conclusion

Liverpool will be making a smart acquisition in Lloyd Kelly and the youngster will fulfil his immense potential at Anfield.

Lloyd will provide some much-needed cover for Andy Robertson, who has been an ever-present for the Reds this season. Liverpool should reignite their interest in the young English full-back.
