Liverpool reviving interest in this Serie A midfield virtuoso would help them win the elusive PL trophy

Liverpool Opinion: Why should the Reds revive interest in Alejandro Gomez?

Back in January 2018, Liverpool expressed their interest in signing Atalanta midfielder Alejandro Gomez. However, the transfer couldn’t see the light of the day.

Now, the Argentine ace seems like the need of the hour for the Reds, as they are currently deprived of a creative midfielder.

Gomez had a remarkable season in the Serie A, eventually helping Atalanta to secure a qualification spot.

In the process, he amassed a total of 11 goals and 13 assists in all competitions and topped the assists charts in the Serie A as well.

Papu Gomez – the missing piece of the puzzle

A strange but appealing fact is that his assist tally has always touched the double-figure mark in the past three seasons.

The 4-time capped Argentine playmaker also cut an impressive figure in terms of stats last season. His average key passes steered up to 3.2, with an average of 2.2 dribbles and 3 shots attempted per game. By and large, he was miles away from other players in his position in the league.

That being said, Jurgen Klopp can’t find a better option than Gomez to bolster the squad.

An astute passer and dribbler of the ball, Gomez is exceptional at set-pieces, through balls and moreover, his sheer willingness to defy his age.

A jack of all trades, the Atalanta No.10 is versatile enough to embrace several roles upfront and yet, his best position is playing in the hole.

Elsewhere at Anfield last season, the ineptitude in the midfield was hiding in the plain sight, as their power-packed attacking and defensive units managed to get the job done.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

Though they won the UEFA Champions League, there should be a tinge of regret following their narrow defeat in the Premier League title race.

Keeping all that in mind, the former Dortmund manager should form an impeccable squad next season. And Gomez is capable of being the final piece to the puzzle that the Reds have been looking for.

At the same time, Gomez won’t find it difficult to adapt to the Merseyside club’s style of play, as he would be accompanied by one of the best defensive and attacking units in Europe.

Final Verdict

Liverpool don’t have to be expensive in the near-ending transfer window since they already have a sturdy unit at their disposal.

The lack of creativity in the middle of the park would be long gone should they manage to sign Gomez, who would be an absolute bargain. With his inclusion, the Reds can finally have a shot at the elusive Premier League crown.
