Liverpool FC Opinion: Why should the Reds revive their interest in Timo Werner?

Liverpool have only recently concluded an extravagant season, clinching the UCL title as well as finishing second behind Manchester City by a narrow margin in the Premier League.

One of the enticing parts of their current squad is the attacking line-up, which includes the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, with the latter being the focal point.

The deadly trident shared 69 goals and 26 assists between them in the previous season, making them one of the fiercest attacking trios in Europe.

However, Firimino’s stats proved to be less appealing when compared to the rest of his attack partners, though he excels in much deeper roles.

The Brazilian forward’s goal and assists tally the last term witnessed a certain decline when compared to the 2017/18 season.

Going forward, Jurgen Klopp has to find an out-and-out centre-forward, who is agile and has an appetite for goals. Timo Werner fits the description in every possible way.

The RB Leipzig striker has been a transfer interest of the Reds for a long time, while fellow Bundesliga club Bayern Munich are also keen on the German.

Werner’s brilliant season and why he should be the long-time replacement for Firmino?

The 23-year-old racked up 19 goals and 10 assists in the previous season for the Eagles, while adding one more to his goal tally in the Euro Qualifiers for the German national team.

Not only was he the club’s top scorer but Werner also played a pivotal role to help Leipzig finish third in the Bundesliga, thus ensuring a place in the Champions League next season.

Timo Werner

With that being said, Werner should be the cornerstone of Klopp’s attack in future.

Breaking down last season’s stats, Werner averaged 3.6 shots per game plus an average of 1.2 key passes and 1 dribble per game.

Having acquired a name for his blistering pace, the German striker is clinical with the finishing and uses his diminutive appearance to greater use.

Besides, he looks like a tailor-made option for Klopp’s pressing style of play and a move to the Premier League at this stage would test his temperament at all cost.

Final Verdict

The Reds need to find a successor for the 28-year-old Firmino sooner or later and Werner is the right man to lead their attack in future.
