Liverpool reviving interest in signing this 31-year-old target from 2018 would be a shrewd move by Klopp

Why Liverpool should go all out for Alejandro Gomez in January

Back in January 2018, the Daily Mirror had claimed that Liverpool were interested in signing Atalanta playmaker Alejandro Gomez. However, a move didn’t go through then.

Alejandro Gomez, 31, finished the last campaign with seven goals and 11 assists in Serie A as Atalanta clinched Champions League qualification. He has been a crucial member of the Serie A side ever since joining from Metalist Kharkiv in 2014.

The Argentinean has hit the ground running in the new campaign, bagging an assist in Atalanta’s exciting 3-2 victory over SPAL. Having previously attracted Liverpool’s attention, should the Reds revive their interest in Alejandro Gomez and go for him in January?

Liverpool have enjoyed a rollicking start to the new Premier League campaign, winning all the four games thus far. The recent victory came on Sunday at Burnley, with the Reds also setting a club record of 13 consecutive top-flight wins in the process.

It has been also rosy for Jurgen Klopp’s boys in the first few weeks of the 2019/20 campaign. However, Klopp knows his side are still some way short of matching the quality of champions Manchester City’s squad, and thus, must look to add a couple of players in January after signing only younger talents in the summer transfer window.

In Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, Liverpool undoubtedly have one of the best attacks in Europe. The trio are a pure joy to watch when in full song, capable of ripping apart any defences.

However, Klopp needs a creative midfielder that can consistently produce chances as well as share of the goalscoring burden off Salah, Mane and Firmino—something which Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri have failed to do so.

That’s when the signing of Alejandro Gomez would make sense for the Reds. Gomez is versatile enough to play in different roles across the front-line, but he is at his lethal best when deployed in the hole.

The 31-year-old is nippy, which explains why he can cover so much ground and influence the game with his vision and creative passing skills.

The diminutive Argentinean has excellent close control and is known for his superior distribution and impressive shooting accuracy, especially from distance. He is exceptional from set-pieces and is a real workhorse who’ll perfectly suit Klopp’s system at Anfield.

At 31, Gomez could also be ready to play the role of a squad player for the Reds.

Verdict

Without any second thoughts, Liverpool should look for Gomez in the New Year as the experienced playmaker could make them firm favourites to defend their Champions League crown and make another push for the Premier League crown.
