Liverpool Player Ratings vs Manchester City – Win It For Gerrard

Liverpool player ratings vs Manchester City

Gerrard

An exhilarating encounter at Anfield saw Liverpool edge past Manchester City by a 3-2 margin in what was a stern test for Brendan Rodgers’ men. Raheem Sterling gave Liverpool the lead while Martin Skrtel doubled the advantage by the half an hour mark. Manchester City though, despite losing talismanic Yaya Toure came rampaging back with two goals in a space of five minutes that turned the game on its head. However Philippe Coutinho took full advantage of Vincent Kompany’s costly error to give the Merseysiders a huge win on the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. As Liverpool are comfortably in the driving seat for the title, here are the Reds’ player ratings from Anfield.

Simon Mingolet: The Belgian had nothing to do for two of City’s goals but made a stellar save from Fernandinho’s effort just before the break. Had some dodgy moments but held firm when needed.

Rating: 2.5/5

Glen Johnson: The Englishman did his best going forward joining attacks time and again but his major contribution was clearing the ball off the line from one of City’s great chances. Couldn’t do anything to prevent City’s second goal which took a deflection from his boots.

Rating: 2/5

Martin Srktel: Colossal is defense making great anticipations and some lovely interceptions. Scored with a brilliant header from Gerrard’s corner.

Rating: 4/5

Mamadou Sakho: The Frenchman was lucky not to have conceded on what was a sure penalty after a rash tackle on City striker Edin Dzeko, which the referee got all wrong. Sakho looked unconvincing and hardly impressed with his shift on the pitch.

Rating: 1.5/5

John Flanagan:  One of the best players for the Reds this season, Flanagan played his heart out, showed great character and joined attacks frequently from the left flank.

Rating: 3/5

Steven Gerrard: Set up a goal from the corner and then made a goal saving tackle, Gerrard embodied Liverpool’s passion out on the pitch. Brilliant with his passing, ferocious tackling and most importantly showing the immense desire to get the win and get his team through the line. WIN IT FOR GERRARD!

Rating: 4.5/5

Jordan Henderson: Gave his all for the match, joined attacks with great aplomb and played his heart out before a needless tackle on Nasri meant, he would be sent off.

Rating: 3/5

Raheem Sterling: Showed great composure for the first goal giving Liverpool the lead. Should be on England’s flight to Brazil for the World Cup come in June.

Rating: 4/5

Philippe Coutinho:  Worked his socks off showing relentless work rate and scored the winner in the afternoon which might at the end of the season give Liverpool their long awaited title in nearly 24 years of waiting.

Rating: 4/5

Daniel Sturridge: A day off for the Englishman, who was at the best pedestrian. Missed a glorious chance early on but sadly and yet again, looked unconvincing in a big match.

Rating: 1/5

Luis Suarez: Was back to his old antics, lucky not to have been sent off for what was a blatant dive in the second half. But the kind of player he is, assisted Sterling’s opener and made some great touches on the ball.

Rating: 2.5/5
