Liverpool Might Have Missed Out On This £42m Tottenham Defender But It Is Not A Grave Mistake

Why Jurgen Klopp’s Decision To Not Sign Davinson Sanchez Is A Disaster

The summer transfer window was supposed to be Liverpool’s opportunity for a complete defensive overhaul, which has been one of the team’s biggest weaknesses since the Brendan Rodgers era. Such was the state of Liverpool’s backline that it even cost them their first shot at a Premier League title back in 2013/14 season.

The Rodgers led Liverpool side crumbled in the final few games of the season, eventually losing the the League title. But Jurgen Klopp had the perfect opportunity this summer to completely revamp the defence with the club’s owners backing him up financially.

But, Klopp’s plan of signing Liverpool’s priority summer target went up in flames after Southampton refused to sell Virgil Van Dijk. The Dutch defender was identified by Klopp and his staff as the ideal candidate to fix the Liverpool’s defensive woes. The German manager was so sure of signing Van Dijk that he did not even consider an alternative signing in the case of things going south. Unfortunately, it did go south in the end.

Jurgen Klopp had enough time left in the summer window to bring in an alternative to Van Dijk, but the Reds boss chose to ignore other potential candidates like Davinson Sanchez, who is now a Tottenham player after his £42m move from Ajax FC.

Jurgen Klopp

Reports claim that Jurgen Klopp turned his eye away from signing Davinson Sanchez despite the Colombian being available. This news would have obviously upset a lot of Liverpool fans, especially given the state that they are in at the moment. The Reds have only managed to win one out of their last seven games, while only managing to keep 1 clean sheet in the process.

The fact that Liverpool have conceded 12 goals in 7 games in the League speaks volumes of the state of their defence. Yes, Van Dijk would have been an excellent addition to the side, probably the missing piece of the Reds’ defence. But Klopp clearly took a risk by not opting for other candidates like Davinson Sanchez.

However, the Colombian only has two seasons of experience under his belt and has never played in England. The lack of significant experience could be one of the main factors behind Klopp not choosing to not sign Sanchez. He is just 21, and with senior players like Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan already in the squad, it’s pretty difficult to see the young Colombian making it straight into the team on the basis of experience.

But if Klopp can somehow manage to make the most of what he has at his disposal until January, there is every chance that Van Dijk could join the Reds.
