Liverpool Opinion: Why Liverpool should make a move for James McConnel

The Shields Gazette has reported that Liverpool are targetting Sunderland star James McConnel as the Reds look to reinforce their youth teams. Times have been good to Liverpool for the first time in a long time, with Jurgen Klopp at the helm.

Not only do Liverpool have a genuine chance at a Premier League title but they have a chance at a Champions League trophy. At the moment, Liverpool lead the Premier League table with a two-point lead over Manchester City but Pep Guardiola and co do have a game in hand.

Despite that, Liverpool have a rather impressive squad after spending heavily over the last few seasons to get to where they are. But that doesn’t mean that Klopp’s forgotten about the youth team.

More than a fair share of youth stars have played this season for Liverpool, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ki-Jan Hoever, Rafa Camacho and a few others flourishing. It’s been a feature of Jurgen Klopp’s teams even during his spell at Borussia Dortmund and now it looks like the Reds have a new target.

Sunderland U14 star James McConnel has been a standout star for the club, and more importantly, he has been showing a lot of promise. An a-typical winger, the youngster played a big role in the Black Cats winning the Youdan Trophy recently, scoring a superb solo goal that personified him.

It showed off the best in McConnel, with his pace, power and even clinical nature in front of the goal. Simply mesmeric to watch at times, James McConnel really has a lot to offer Liverpool and his work-ethic is immense for someone his age.

The youngster has a long way to go before he becomes a player worthy of playing for Liverpool. But at the current rate, McConnel has what it takes.

Only time will tell if he ever does develop into a class act. While it undoubtedly is a risk to take on a young and untested star, James McConnel has the talent to become a great star in the near future.

However, given that Sunderland do offer a better first team chance for a budding young star, it’s a move that would benefit both parties.

Conclusion

Liverpool have a bright present and will have a brighter future if their youth academy is anything to go by, but even they need reinforcements.

Someone like James McConnel will not only add that but the young winger’s budding talent can be better nurtured at Liverpool’s youth academy.
