Liverpool Legend States that Brendan Rodgers’ Over-Confidence Hindered the Reds

Former England international Steven Gerrard has now blamed Kop boss Brendan Rodgers’ “overconfident” approach to Liverpool’s all important clash against Chelsea as the reason for the Merseyside club’s failure to win the 2013-14 Premier League title. The former Swansea City manager has already been troubled with the poor start to the new campaign and headlines linking former Borussia Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp with his job.

The Reds barely made it through on penalties past Carlisle in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday and the Independent posted quotes from Gerrard’s new autobiography to add further fuel to the fire. Back then, two seasons ago, the Merseyside club led the table by five points with three games left to the finish and were beaten 2-0 by the Blues in April 2014.

Manchester City later won their game in hand and eventually ended up winning the title by two points, as the match against the Blues turned after Gerrard’s horrific slip, on the brink of half-time. However, the LA Galaxy man has spoke about the game in his book Steven Gerrard: My Story and has pointed the finger at Rodgers as well.

He stated, “I’ve never been able to say this in public before but I was seriously concerned that we thought we could blow Chelsea away. I sensed an over-confidence in Brendan’s team talks. We played into Chelsea’s hands. I feared it then and I know it now.”
