Liverpool opinion: The Reds should make a move for Ruben Neves

English news outlet Mirror has reported that Liverpool are interested in a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves. The midfield maestro has been brilliant for the Molineux side, which is shocking given that it is his very first season in the English top-flight.

He arrived last season after a bright start with Porto, shining in both the Champions League and in the Liga Nos. The move was a shocker, given how well Neves had played and his sheer God-given quality.

However it was a move that worked perfectly for both sides and Neves ended up running Nuno Espirito Santo’s team.

He played an immense part in Wolves getting promoted and has continued his form this season. A gorgeous player to watch, Neves has the ability to play as either a number 6 or as a number 8.

He’s often used in a double pivot ahead of a back-three for Wolves alongside fellow Portuguese star Joao Moutinho, to great effect.

His defensive nuance makes Neves perfect for that role and together, they led Wolves to the FA Cup semi-final. It’s that role that Liverpool should look at as it makes Ruben Neves effectively perfect for their team.

It will allow Jurgen Klopp to play a similar formation to the one he is currently using. Instead, it would use two players capable of playing as a double pivot. So far, the former Borussia Dortmund boss has used Fabinho and Jordan Henderson together, alongside James Milner.

But the fact that Milner is 33 years old and out of contract at the end of the season means that the club needs a new midfielder. Georgino Wijnaldum has done relatively well but he isn’t a title-winning player.

On the other hand, someone like Ruben Neves has an immense future and often reminds the Premier League a lot of Xabi Alonso.

That and the fact that their midfield needs a refreshment should be enough for Liverpool to make a move. The likes of Manchester City (Guardian) and Manchester United (Express) are interested in a move and the Reds should push hard to get this done.

However, a fee of around £100million (Guardian) has been quoted for the Portuguese midfielder. That would easily shatter club records for all three sides and it’s a race that the Reds should consider coming out on top.

Conclusion

Ruben Neves is a class act and his presence would be welcomed into any team in the world, especially given his current form. The youngster has a bright future ahead of him and that is something Liverpool should take full advantage of.
