Liverpool beating Man United to sign this £25m prodigy would be another important bargain buy by Klopp

Why Steven Bergwijn would be a terrific signing for Klopp’s Liverpool

The Liverpool Echo has revealed that Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have entered the race for PSV Eindhoven starlet Steven Bergwijn. Reports about the 21-year-old moving to the Premier League have flooded the rumour mill in recent weeks, with links to Manchester United (h/t the Express), Tottenham (h/t the Sun) and even Arsenal (h/t the Express).

However, nothing has materialized yet and now it looks like league leaders Liverpool have joined the race for the exciting Dutch prospect.

Only 21 years old, Steven Bergwijn has already caught the eye of the world, especially the Premier League and it’s no surprise that he has done so. The winger has produced an incredible 18 goals in 24 appearances this season.

His move to PSV saw him hit new heights, one that few scouts predicted and his performances have simply improved season after season.

In Liverpool, however, there is a chance that the young Steven Bergwijn might get lost amidst all the star power. The likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Xherdan Shaqiri and so many others stand in the way of the 21-year-old and a first-team spot, which means that if a move does occur, the Dutch starlet will play a secondary role.

But if he plays with half the confidence and swagger that he does at the moment for PSV, then Bergwijn will make the wing spot his own in no time. In the end, either Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah might have to give way to the burgeoning young talent.

Mane’s performances haven’t been as consistent as when he first arrived at Anfield and his performance against Napoli in the final Champions League group stage game had a lot of fans cursing him.

The 26-year-old struggled to find the net and while he started the season brightly, things have only gone downhill from there. Now with Bergwijn only costing somewhere around £25million, he can be another bargain buy for the Reds.

However, given the expectations and Memphis Depay’s history in the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp and company need to make sure that Steven Bergwijn survives in the Premier League if a move does go through.

The English top-tier isn’t an easy place for young talent to survive unless you’ve been born and brought up playing high-octane and physical football.
