Celtic vs Motherwell Report: Celtic FC Match Report

Celtic comfortably stroll past Motherwell in an impressive 4-1 victory which included a blinder of a free-kick from Odsonne Edouard who got himself a brace and was the absolute star of the Celtic show.

This important game in the Scottish Premiership began with the home side seeing much of the ball. They began the tie really well and showed confidence in possession displaying some slick passing and excellent movement from the team all around.

They began to create good plays in midfield and it seemed like Motherwell would be happy to just sit in front of their back-line to try and soak up the pressure from the Celtic stars. They were beginning to push and the opening goal was slowly becoming a matter of time.

Within the opening 10 minutes, the Hoops had already highlighted their dominance in the match and were certainly expected to score first. Being in the ascendancy, they created multiple goalscoring changes but were just unable to convert.

They finally broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when a good threaded pass from Kieran Tierney found a charging Ryan Christie in the box. His deep cross to the far post picked out Scott Sinclair who smashed it in to make it 1-0 to the league leaders.

After this, Motherwell fell even deeper and within 6 minutes of the opener, Celtic had their 2-goal cushion. Ewan Henderson whipped in a brilliant cross towards the front post and Odsonne Edouard was jolly on the spot to head it home and make it 2-0 to the home side.

As the half wore on, it began to show that Celtic were clearly in the ascendancy with Motherwell doing anything that can to hold onto the 2-0 scoreline at least. They were extremely deep and were unable to create anything of real purpose throughout the half.

As the teams went into half time, it looked like Celtic would coast through the 2nd period because of all the control and possession they enjoyed in the first half and the 2nd half began in an almost explosive fashion.

Celtic were in control yet again in this fixture as they began their push for the 3rd goal which wild surely put this match outside Motherwell’s reach. They were getting the ball into the opposition box consistently and made the 3rd goal seem inevitable.

But completely against the run of play, Motherwell got one back in the 51st minute when Ryan Christie picked up an injury and Celtic kicked the ball out. Motherwell then threw the box into the Celts’ half but James Scott picked up the ball.

He ran into the empty Celtic half and once his shot was saved by Scott Bain, Gboly Ariyibi was on the spot to tuck in the rebound as Motherwell scored with one of the most disgusting and embarrassing goals ever scored by a team, taking advantage of an opposition injury.

In the 89th minute, Edouard bagged his brace to ensure that all three points were staying in Glasgow. He curled in a brilliant free-kick from 25 yards out which went in off the underside of the crossbar to make it 3-1 on the night.

As the game was done and dusted, Celtic added a fourth to rub more salt into Motherwell wounds when an easy ball was slipped through by James Forrest. It found Oliver Burke in the box who had the quality to finish it first time and give Celtic a comfortable 4-1 victory which helped them retain top spot.

Here’s how some ecstatic Celtic fans reacted to this emphatic victory:
