Leicester City opinion: Foxes want Andrea Petagna – a good move?

English news outlet the Guardian has reported that Leicester City are keen on a move for Serie A star Andrea Petagna. The Foxes are looking for a replacement for Jamie Vardy, with the 32-year-old ageing.

Despite his age, the Englishman is still the club’s top scorer at the moment, enjoying a renaissance under Brendan Rodgers. So far, he’s managed 16 goals in the Premier League but half of that has come under Rodgers, with Vardy netting 8 goals in his last 10 games.

That is a stunning streak but not one that surprises anyone anymore given what the former England international has done in the past. That’s why replacing him will be a very tough job and one that the club hasn’t handled well.

They brought in Kelechi Iheanacho to do just that but the former Manchester City striker has failed to live up to his potential. He’s managed to net just one goal this season, scoring ten in total since his arrival in the summer of 2017.

In comparison, Iheanacho managed to score 21 goals in 64 appearances for Manchester City. He needs two more appearances for Leicester to go past that mark. It shows a marked change in the young forward but he’s still only 22 years old and has time on his side to improve.

However, that leaves the Foxes without a reliable goalscorer for the time being and that’s exactly what Andrea Petagna can become.

The former AC Milan striker is currently on loan at SPAL from Atalanta but the Guardian believes that a deal can be struck despite it being a complicated situation.

He would be a marked improvement on Leicester City’s previous acquisitions and at the same time, he is nothing like Jamie Vardy. A centre-forward, the 23-year-old has played a much deeper role, similar to what Roberto Firmino does for Liverpool.

But like Firmino, Petagna is a clinical goalscorer and does it with absolute ease. So far this season, he’s managed 14 goals in the Serie A.

But in the past, he’s averaged 5 assists in the Serie A, which shows just how creative he can be. This will help ease the burden of the other Leicester City players and he would be a great addition to the team.

Conclusion

Leicester City need to start looking towards the future and one way to do that is by looking for a replacement for Jamie Vardy.

That will not be easy for the club but someone like Andrea Petagna will help them move on from the former Englishman.
