Leicester would be very clever to cash in on the ageing Simpson and sign this Marseille star instead

Why Leicester City should go all out to sign Bouna Sarr

According to a report from L’Equipe, Leicester City are interested in signing Marseille star Bouna Sarr.

Bouna Sarr, 26, moved to Marseille from FC Metz in July 2015 and has gone onto become a permanent fixture under manager Rudi Garcia. He has played 23 games in all competitions this season, impressing with his versatility to play in various positions.

Leicester City have suffered a massive blow as Jonny Evans has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a broken toe. The Foxes already have had a lot of injury problems that have hampered their progress this season. Apart from Evans, Daniel Amartey is also sidelined following his nasty ankle injury sustained against West Ham in October.

Amartey, who has signed a new contract to keep him at the East Midlands club until 2022, is currently working back to fitness and could return in March. The injury to the Ghanaian has forced Danny Simpson to stay put at Leicester but he is out of contract at the end of the season.

It appears as if the Foxes are reluctant to hand Simpson a new deal as they are yet to open any talks regarding a new contract. And as the 31-year-old’s contract expires in the summer, Leicester can cash in on the defender in the January transfer window rather than losing him for free after five months.

Offloading Simpson in the ongoing transfer window won’t be a good idea as the 31-year-old is an experienced head. But even if Puel considers letting Simpson go, he should make sure he signs Bouna Sarr from Marseille.

Bouna Sarr is a tactically flexible player who has played at right-back, in central midfield and on the right wing at Marseille. Versatility is his greatest asset as he gives the manager the tactical freedom to use him as per the game’s need.

While he has the pace to play as a wide forward down the flanks, the 26-year-old has been frequently used at right-back by Marseille boss Rudi Garcia.

A fast and agile player blessed with quick feet and a sudden burst of pace, Sarr has also learnt the art of defending, which he lacked previously. He has now become a good defender and possesses the pace to make recovery runs and intercept his opponent.

That said, having Sarr in the team will certainly make Leicester stronger. And the French-born ace’s arrival this month would give Puel a chance to cash in on the ageing Simpson.
