Leicester City signing this £40m English star is a move that could pay off despite the doubts

Leicester City opinion: James Tarkowski would be a top fit for the Foxes

According to a report from The Sun, Leicester City are interested in signing Burnley defender James Tarkowski this summer.

James Tarkowski, 26, has proven to be a reliable defender for Burnley since joining from Brentford back in 2014. The 26-year-old’s form coupled with the fact that he has played for England at international level means the Clarets are demanding £40million for the player.

The report claims Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers views Tarkowski as a replacement for star defender Harry Maguire, but should they splash £40million for the Burnley centre-half?

Maguire is heavily linked with a move to Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants the England international to be a part of the young, talented and hungrier squad at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old is a highly-rated defender in the Premier League and has been a consistent performer for Leicester since joining from Hull City a couple of summers ago.

Should the Foxes lose Maguire to Manchester United this summer, Rodgers should urge his club to meet Burnley’s valuation and sign Tarkowski as his replacement.

Plenty will be said about whether Tarkowski is worth the money if the deal does go through but this is a situation where the specific transfer must be taken outside the context of the market as a whole.

Tarkowski may not be that exciting signing which the fans will hope to see as a replacement for Maguire but he has developed into a reliable centre-half over the last two seasons in the Premier League.

He’s a strong, powerful centre-back who is rarely beaten in the air and his arrival would inject quality into Rodgers’ defence, with his composure on the ball being another key feature.

The Englishman is a good organiser of the backline and someone who can make some crucial interceptions for his side but lacks the pace to recover when left isolated in a 1v1 situation.

He is also a potent goal-threat from set-pieces in the opposition half. All in all, Tarkowski will be an excellent addition to the Foxes squad ahead of the new campaign.

Verdict

£40million is a lot of money even in today’s market, but Leicester will have funds available to them following Maguire’s potential sale.

Thus, the Foxes shouldn’t think twice about splashing the cash on Tarkowski, as the defender could turn out to be an inspired addition to Rodgers’ side with genuine ambitions of breaking into the top six.
