According to a report in Leicester Mercury, Leicester City are linked with a move to sign Marseille winger Florian Thauvin during this transfer window.
The Frenchman is touted to leave the Ligue 1 side after being “fed up” with them during the latter half of 18/19 season (h/t Leicester Mercury). He scored 16 goals in 33 league appearances to mark a positive impression on his onlookers.
Thauvin, who was also a subject of interest from Arsenal this summer (h/t Leicester Mercury), played Premier League football before at Newcastle United and didn’t give a good account of himself.
Currently, his contract with Marseille expires at the end of 2020/21 season and on the basis of what we have witnessed so far, an extension might be a remote possibility.
Here’s why Leicester, who are understood to have made a €30m bid for the player, should take this opportunity and complete the deal to sign him:
Predominantly a right-winger, Florian Thauvin is capable of operating on the other side and playing as an attacking midfielder. If needed, he can also be deployed as a supporting striker or as a centre-forward.
During the course of the 18/19 season for Marseille, the France international operated in each of those positions, although he mostly prefers starting on the right-wing.
His returns of 18 goals and nine assists in 37 appearances in all competitions were fantastic, to say the least. In fact, he has been great for Marseille over the past two to three campaigns.
Even though he flopped at Newcastle a few years back, Thauvin looks like a player who has worked on his game and is ready to take the Premier League by storm with consistent performances.
Thus, Leicester City should make a move to sign him ahead of next season. The Frenchman’s addition would really make the Foxes’ squad capable of challenging for a top-six finish in the league.
All in all, we can conclude by saying that Brendan Rodgers’ men shouldn’t hesitate to sign Florian Thauvin. If this happens, Manchester United’s position in the top-six would be under severe threat.
