Leicester City reviving interest in this 27-year-old clinical finisher would get them a perfect Vardy backup – opinion

Leicester City opinion: Foxes should revive interest in Baghdad Bounedjah

According to a report in Leicester Mercury, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has been impressed by the quality of the squad he has inherited, but vows to make additions in the summer transfer window if they are to challenge for a top-six finish.

Out of the few areas to strengthen, a striker who can back up as well as partner Jamie Vardy in certain games is on the list (h/t Leicester Mercury). The Foxes have Kelechi Iheanacho as the option, but he hasn’t done enough since joining them from Manchester City.

Hence, the club would be right to sign a quality striker in the summer and lessen the scoring burden on Vardy.

Back in December 2018, they were linked with a move for Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah. At that time, he had scored more goals in 2018 than Lionel Messi (h/t Leicester Mercury).

It was also suggested that the front man, who plays for Qatar side Al Sadd, would be available for a fee around £10m, which is pretty affordable. He has been linked with Championship hopefuls Leeds United as well (h/t Leicester Mercury).

Here’s why Leicester should revive their interest in the Algerian and sign him in the summer:

Bounedjah’s addition would bring different dimension

If compared to Vardy, Bounedjah is slightly different. The Algerian is someone who would be in the box when the crosses come in. However, he can also drop deep, link up the play with the midfield and then spin around the defence to make a run in behind.

Hence, we can say that the 27-year-old is not only a poacher of goals but also a linker of play between the front-line and the attacking midfield. In terms of finishing, he has a fantastic right foot to curl the ball into the back of the net.

Furthermore, his height (1.84m) allows him to be a considerable threat in the opposition box from set-pieces. He is mobile and knows when and how to make the runs to stay away from the markers.

As mentioned above, Bounedjah scored more goals (58) in professional football in 2018 than Messi. Therefore, even though the Qatari may not be the best barometer (with all due respect), the 27-year-old is a clinical finisher in front of the goal.

Conclusion

We can see why Leicester were targeting him in the January window. They just have to make sure that the Algerian international is signed in the summer.
