Leeds United signing this highly talented Croatian U-21 star would get them a perfect Kalvin Phillips successor

Leeds United opinion: Should the Whites sign Sunjic?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Leeds United are interested in signing Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Ivan Sunjic.

The Croatian starlet recently starred in Euro U-21 competition, where he also captained his side. He is also chased by fellow Championship club Birmingham City, who have submitted a bid worth £3.5million.

Sunjic – another rising star from the Croatian top-flight

The 21-year-old has been one of the mainstays in HNL 1, playing more than 100 matches combined for both Dinamo Zagreb and Lokomotiva. Sunjic caught wider attention when he broke into Dinamo Zagreb’s main team at the age of 17.

A holding midfielder by trade, he can also play at different positions in the midfield. The 2017-18 campaign showcased the Croatian’s goal-scoring intentions as he bagged a total of six goals and an assist. On top of everything, Sunjic has represented the Croatian national team at various age levels.

Can Sunjic be Kalvin Phillips’ successor?

At Elland Road, Kalvin Phillips continued to toil every day as he became a cog in the engine over the course. Aged 23, Phillips has already more than 100 appearances under the belt and Marcelo Bielsa heavily relied on him last season.

Like adding insult to the injury, the English man has been heavily linked with a summer move to Aston Villa, who will be playing in the Premier League next season.

Having already let go of one of their promising talents, Jack Clarke, to Tottenham, Bielsa’s men are having quite a tough time ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign.

Yet, Leeds can straighten things by singing Sunjic, who will be of great use to them. The Croatian youngster is a defensive midfielder by trade but can also embrace the central role.

Sunjic’s versatility in the middle of the park would be an added advantage to the Whites.

The Argentine manager is looking for an optimistic campaign after miserably failing in their promotion push last season. Bielsa, who is a great admirer of young talents, can highly benefit from the addition of Sunjic.
