Leeds United Opinion: Why the Whites should quickly snap up Gary Cahill?

According to a report from the Daily Star, Leeds United are interested in signing free agent Gary Cahill, who was released by Chelsea at the end of last season.

The former England international, 33, is coming off a season where he has played the least number of games in his career for the last decade. He made only two Premier League appearances after being overlooked by Maurizio Sarri and played four Europa League games.

Newly-promoted Aston Villa are also keen on Cahill but having signed Tyrone Mings recently, the 33-year-old central defender may have to look elsewhere, and there is a gap in the Leeds backline which he could fill.

The Whites came very close to sealing promotion last season. They failed to get past Derby County in the play-off semi-finals and will continue playing in the Championship. Marcelo Bielsa has stayed put for another season at Elland Road as the Argentinean hopes to take his team over the line this time around.

Pontus Jansson’s shock exit to Brentford has left the fans sweating over lack of depth in the central defence department and while Leeds have signed Ben White on loan from Brighton, there is a clear room for more defensive reinforcements.

Cahill has proven himself as a top-level centre-back for over a decade now, winning multiple Premier League titles and a Champions League with Chelsea and would be a brilliant fit at Elland Road. He is composed in possession and has been a very good passer of the ball throughout his career, one of the prime reasons why he tasted success at both the club and international level.

The Englishman is a good reader of the game and a tough tackler as well, whilst being an asset from set-pieces. The ex-Bolton man is on the wrong side of 30 and clearly has shown signs of slowing down, but the wealth of experience and the winning mentality he would bring to Leeds could make him an inspired addition.

A vocal leader, Cahill would organise not only the defence but the whole team and get them believing they can beat any opposition they face.

Verdict

If the veteran Englishman can build a strong partnership with Liam Cooper at Leeds, it will provide Bielsa’s side with excellent defensive foundation. All in all, Cahill’s influence would be crucial for Leeds in their push for promotion.

On a free transfer, the 33-year-old defender would be a massive coup for Bielsa’s Whites.
