Championship giants Leeds United have signed forward Rafa Mujica from Spanish champions Barcelona, following his expiration of contract at the Catalan club. (h/t Official Leeds Website)
The 20-year-old versatile forward has signed a three-year contract with the Whites, which will keep him at Elland Road up until the summer of 2022. He is set to join the U23s squad, with the aim to train with the senior team very soon. (h/t Official Leeds Website)
Mujica didn’t manage to get a game for Barcelona’s first-team but he was a regular part of their B team over the past 12-18 months. During the 2018/19 season, he played 33 games and scored seven goals along with one assist.
On the other hand, Leeds United, under Marcelo Bielsa, are evidently looking to enhance the quality of their squad in every aspect to make a better push for promotion next season. Here’s why signing Mujica is good for their youth team for now but a very handy move for the senior side:
Predominantly a centre-forward, Rafa Mujica is capable of operating on either wing and performing at a similar level. He led the line for Barcelona B most of the time last season but was also used on the left-wing, depending on the requirement of the team.
In terms of his attributes, he is pacy enough to trouble the opposition defences, has good dribbling skills, is physically strong and competent in the air. He can also finish off the chances in and around the opposition box and has a good footballing brain, coming from the Barcelona academy.
Thus, Leeds United have done the right thing by signing him on a three-year deal. They can use him in the U23s team and assess his performance level, before handing first-team opportunities.
However, on the basis of what we know about the youngster, he is capable of training with Marcelo Bielsa’s men and fighting for a spot in the first-team. His talent and versatility up front could be something the Whites could do with during the next season.
All in all, we can conclude by saying that Leeds have gotten a very good player for free. They can expect big things from him in the future, which would only help the club move in the right direction.
