Why Mbaye Diagne will solve Leeds United’s attacking woes

Leeds United are interested in signing Mbaye Diagne from Kasimpasa this summer, according to reports. The Whites had been linked with moves for Abel Hernandez and Matej Vydra but no agreement has been reached with any of them.

Marcelo Bielsa has brought in two new players thus far – Jamal Blackman and Lewis Baker, with both joining on loan from Chelsea. However, a new striker is also needed and Diagne, who is also attracting interest from Hull, seems like a good option.

The Senegalese striker scored 12 goals and provided 2 assists in 17 appearances for Kasimpasa last season. The 26-year old was born in Dakar, before moving to Italy. He started his career with lower league sides such as Brandizzo and Bra, where he excelled.

Shockingly, he was signed by Juventus in 2013, although he never made an appearance for the Italian giants. Instead, he was loaned out to various teams, some of them being Lierse, Al Shabab and Westerlo.

His time at Lierse was quite prolific, as he netted 7 times in 11 matches. However, it seemed like his career was stalling, so he left Juventus and went to Hungary to play for Ujpest.

Diagne performed well there, scoring 11 goals in 14 matches. In February, the attacker moved to Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda, where he played 44 games, netting in 16 goals. After leaving China, he signed for Kasimpasa.

The forward may not have a great record in any of Europe’s top leagues but at this stage of the transfer window, a striker with 12 goals in 17 games in a league that is still competitive, may just turn out to be a success for Leeds.

There are just 12 months remaining on Diagne’s contract at Kasimpasa but the club do have the option to extend it by an additional season. However, they are prepared to sell him this summer for the right price.

According to reports, the Senegalese striker should cost Leeds around £3.6million, although another problem could be his huge wage demands.

Asked about his future, Diagne said:

“There are teams that are interested. But for now I am a player of Kasimpasa.”

The attacker seems like an interesting option for Leeds – he’s strong, tall, powerful, and appears to have got back his goal-scoring instincts. A potential deal might solve the Whites’ striking woes.
