Why Eamonn Brophy would be a smart acquisition for Leeds United

Back in January, Daily Mail had claimed that Leeds United were interested in signing highly-rated Kilmarnock forward Eamonn Brophy. However, a deal didn’t materialize.

Eamonn Brophy, 23, joined Kilmarnock in 2017 on a three-year deal and had become a key player at the club.

An impressive debut season earned him fresh terms until 2021 and he has continued to impress at Rugby Park. The 23-year-old managed nine goals and three assists in 24 league games last season, as Killie finished third in the table.

Brophy has blown hot and cold in the new campaign, with just three goals and an assist so far in the Scottish Premiership. Nevertheless, Leeds United must reignite their interest in the forward when the transfer window reopens.

Leeds have enjoyed a solid start to the new Championship campaign and are just 2 points behind league leaders West Bromwich Albion.

The Whites have a thin squad just like last season and they must add a couple of players in January to secure an automatic promotion berth. And one area that Bielsa should prioritize addressing is the striking department.

Patrick Bamford has been Bielsa’s first-choice centre-forward, with the 26-year-old scoring six goals in 17 starts. While Arsenal loanee Eddie Nketiah continues to be a useful option, the 20-year-old is still waiting for his first Championship start and is currently sidelined with an abdominal injury.

His last outing was from the bench in the goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday, with an injury forcing him to watch on from the sidelines since then.

To put things into perspective, the lack of options upfront has been well-documented and the acquisition of Brophy could possibly go a long way in solving that problem.

Leeds are renowned for their high press under Bielsa and Brophy would be a good fit. The 23-year-old, who can also play out wide, has done well in the Scottish Premiership over the last couple of seasons and could add some extra firepower to Bielsa’s attack.

Verdict

The Leeds boss has a knack for bringing out the absolute best from his players and he has showcased that at Elland Road as well.

At 23, Brophy has the potential to work wonders under an astute tactician like Bielsa. All in all, bringing in a player like the Kilmarnock hitman could see Leeds unearth a diamond.
