Leeds signing this 21-year-old Spanish prodigy would be a massive statement of intent and Bielsa must get him

Leeds United Opinion: Oscar Melendo will sharpen the Whites’ attack

Leeds United’s season began to dip after the holiday period and while it was heavily surprising that they maintained top spot for such a long time, their drop down was inevitable given that the chasing pack seem to be in better form.

They have now dropped down but given that they are still just two points off leaders Norwich City, the Whites will be hoping to display a final push in the coming weeks.

As we head into the last leg of the season, every match is decisive in the upcoming weeks and while this could spell trouble for Leeds, they do have the right kind of players to deal with a pressure situation like this.

In Pablo Hernandez, they have an experienced campaigner of the English game, who has been in pressure situations in the past. Despite his ripe age of 33, he is an important member of this squad.

Looking at this squad in an attacking sense, other than Hernandez, they have just two other real wingers available at their disposal. This is partly down to Ezgjan Alioski’s change of position to left-back.

The two options are Jack Harrison and Jack Clarke. While the former is on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City, Clarke is still only 18 years old and despite his impressive displays this season, relying on a teenager at the Premier League level could come back to haunt them.

This situation certainly calls for actions and Marcelo Bielsa should be looking at possible reinforcements to bring in during the summer transfer window in order to deepen the squad at Elland Road.

Given their style of play and the attributes of the players around, Bielsa needs to look no further than 21-year-old Espanyol attacker Oscar Melendo to come in and become a first-team regular at Leeds United.

His movement and sharpness on the ball have been inspiring this season while the composure he shows at such a young age is quite commendable as well. He ghosts past defenders with trickery and also possesses a predatory instinct inside the box.

His 19 La Liga games for Espanyol this season have produced only 3 assists and these stats heavily downplay his exceptional talent. This signing could be gold for Marcelo Bielsa and he must do everything in his power to bring the Spaniard to Elland Road.
