Why Josh Galloway could be the next academy star at Leeds United
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United have completed the signing of promising 17-year-old midfielder Josh Galloway from English League Two outfit Carlisle United.
The Glasgow-born starlet has signed a scholarship deal with the Whites and is expected to initially link up with Carlos Corberan’s U-23 elite development side, with a view to making the step up to the senior ranks in the future.
Galloway, though, will not be allowed to play for the Whites at the senior level until January, given that he has been signed outside of the transfer window.
The arrival of the 17-year-old in West Yorkshire marks Leeds United’s second consecutive raid on Carlisle United this summer after the Whites struck a deal to bring highly-rated teenager Lian McCarron to the club.
Galloway, who is yet to play senior professional football of any sorts, was 13 months into his two-year scholarship deal at Brunton Park but he is now set to team up with McCarron and further his development in the youth ranks at Elland Road.
As per the same report, the Whites have paid an undisclosed fee to secure the services of the midfielder, who is capable of playing anywhere in midfield, including out wide on either flank and up top as a part of the forward line.
Galloway has arrived as a completely unknown entity to the fans at the club but Galloway might as well prove to be a smart investment for the Whites if he manages to fulfil his potential at Elland Road.
Still completely inexperienced at the senior level, the 17-year-old needs time to hone his skills to a level before he is eventually ready to feature in the senior ranks but given his talent, few would back against him carving out a reputation in the years to come.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have already strengthened their squad with a few shrewd loan moves this summer and the deal for Galloway is a clear indication of Victor Orta’s desire to add more quality to the club’s development side, with a view to laying down a solid platform for the future.
The establishment of a clear pathway from the academy to the senior ranks at Elland Road has paid rich dividends for the West Yorkshire giants, with the likes of Jack Clarke, Leif Davies, Ryan Edmondson, Jamie Shackleton, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Will Huffer and Kalvin Phillips all making their mark in the Championship.
