La Liga Weekend Wrap – Barcelona And Real Madrid Cruise Along

The big guns cruise along with comfortable victories in La Liga to maintain similar table positions prior to the match day.

League leaders Barcelona extended their lead over Atletico Madrid to 6 points, who have a match in hand with a 3-1 victory over Zaragoza. And it was Messi’s show once again as the Argentinian got into the act with a brace helping the Catalan club to remain unbeaten at the top of the table. With just 15 minutes on the clock, Messi opened the scoring with some good link up play with Spanish left back Jordi Alba. Zaragoza did not lose their heads after conceding and after some good possession and pressure in front of Barca’s goal equalised at around 25th minute mark.

However, the little maestro Messi took the matters to his own and this time he was the creator of the goal. Messi showed great awareness to cut the ball back and pass it to the unmarked Alex Song who score his first goal for Barcelona since moving from Arsenal. It was not over yet as Messi and co were determined to finish the game on a high and ended up scoring one more goal around the hour mark and it was once again Messi in the score sheet.

Messi further extended his milestone this season, it is now 50 goals from 33 league appearances for the Argentine and 17 in this campaign alone.

Meanwhile reigning champions Real Madrid put in a five star performance against the travelling Bilbao side. The match ended up with 5-1 scoreline adding upto the recent run of good form for Mourinho’s men. Real Madrid have now won 5 consecutive matches and are 8 points behind leaders Barcelona in 3rd place.

As surprising as it gets, Ronaldo was not in the score sheet at Madrid instead it was Benzema with a brace and Ramos, Ozil and Khedira helped to the scoreline. Bilbao have now lost in their last four league games at Bernabeu and have let in 19 goals against the Glactiocs – not a happy place to travel for Bilbao fans.

Benzema opended the scoring at the 12 minute mark and by 30 minutes it was 3-0 up for Madrid. Bilbao pulled one back before half time thanks to a great strike from  Ibai Gomez to give the travelling side any chance in the game. But the second half completely belonged to Mourinho’s men who completely dominated the game. Mesut Oezil quickly ended hopes of a Bilbao comeback before Sami Khedira completed the scoring in the 72nd minute.
