Liverpool chiefs are expected to fly out to Turkey to hold talks with Besiktas over a possible deal for Domagoj Vida, for a reported fee of £27m. The Croatian centre-back’s performances in Russia were phenomenal to attract the interest of a few clubs in the Premier League, including Liverpool.
Vida, along with current Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren was fantastic for the nation in their surreal route to the final of the World Cup. The former has the attributes to be a beast of a defender in the Premier League and Klopp needs him, bearing in mind that Joel Matip isn’t an injury-free option.
Here’s why the 29-year-old will be a good option for the Reds and why he can be a good partner for Virgil van Dijk:
The first and probably the best thing about Vida is his ability to play at various positions across the backline, which means he can be used as an emergency option in the full-back department as well.
The 29-year-old is a very robust defender and despite not having an ideal stature for a centre-back, he possesses the capability to shrug off centre-forwards and win important aerial duels, at a rate of 2.6 per game in the league.
The Croat is a very competitive individual, who will do his job and also make others around him perform the roles expected of them. Vida does not shy away from a tackle, he makes them at 1 per game. He is also a very good reader of the game by stepping up to intercept a through-ball or stop a dangerous build-up.
Croatia were defensively fantastic, mainly due to Vida being at his best. He is a feisty character and with his famous ponytail, he’s a recognisable person around in European football.
Vida is a high-class centre-back who can make a telling difference in the Premier League, which will subsequently allow him to double his reputation in world football. The 29-year-old exhibits the qualities to play a high-intensity game at Liverpool and partner Virgil van Dijk, to form a fearsome partnership at the back for the Reds.
