Why Kevin Gameiro Would Be A Good Addition For Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new second striker ahead of the upcoming season continues. The Premier League runners-up have been linked with various names over the recent months to fill the spot of the alternative striker up front. But one name that keeps popping up time and again is that of Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro.

The French international was rumoured to be a top target for Tottenham by the Mirror back in February this year. And now bookmakers BetVictor (h/t NinetyMinutesOnline.com) have installed Spurs as the favourites to sign Gameiro in the upcoming transfer window.

The North Londoners finished the season as runners-up in the Premier League and the manner of their last two wins – a 6-1 mauling of Leicester City, followed by a 7-1 thrashing of Hull City on the final day might suggest that Tottenham have enough goals in them to carry them forward next season. But, for them to better their performances in the UEFA Champions League and to get their hands on a major trophy, a new striker to supplement Harry Kane will be necessary.

Mauricio Pochettino had recognised that last summer and brought in Vincent Janssen from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. But things haven’t worked out that well for the 22-year old who has struggled to get acclimatised to the rigours of English football. While there is potential in plenty within Janssen, Tottenham will need someone who can hit the ground running if they are to fare better next campaign.

Gameiro, who turned 30 earlier this month, will mark a change from Tottenham’s current transfer policy of signing young promising talents with potential. The Frenchman is a proven performer having scored a lot of goals for Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla and now Atletico Madrid.

Gameiro this season has netted 16 goals and registered 7 assists from 46 appearances across all competitions for Atletico; 27 of which have been from the start. In him, Tottenham will be getting a player who would ready to step into the first team right away, rather than someone who would need to be developed and nurtured.

The French international has title-winning experience, having been part of PSG’s Ligue1 success in 2012/13 and helping Sevilla to three consecutive UEFA Europa League triumphs between 2013 and 2016. This will again be very valuable for a young Spurs side who have no past experience of winning any major honour.

Tottenham were in the title race right until the last two weeks, when a defeat to West Ham United put an end to their challenge, as Chelsea ran out winners, 7 points clear at the top. Signing someone of the ilk of Gameiro, who has the know-how and the experience at the top level to carry the team forward will be a huge plus. He is someone who is a proven goal-getter on both domestic and continental stages and so the Frenchman will go a long way in helping the North Londoners continue their recent rapid rise.
