Patrick Bamford’s second-half brace helped Leeds United beat a 10-man Preston North End 2-0 at the Deepdale to jump back to second place on the Championship table.
Preston had Ben Pearson sent off four minutes into the second half when the game was goalless. Bamford then came to life and scored the two goals to make the difference.
The home side’s midfielder was sent off in the 49th minute after he hauled down the Leeds striker who was bearing down on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat.
13 minutes later, Bamford attempted a thunderous shot from 25 yards out and managed to beat the Preston keeper to give his team the lead.
The, with a quarter of an hour to play, Marcelo Bielsa’s men secured the points when Mateusz Klick picked out Bamford in the box. The former Middlesbrough striker then had a simple task of heading that ball into the back of the net.
Bamford should have had a hattrick later on when he was through on goal all by himself. But dallying on the ball and taking some time allowed the Preston defenders to recover and make a challenge.
All in all, it was a comfortable win for Bielsa’s men, who are now back to second place in the table, having played a game more than third-placed Sheffield United. The Blades will have their chance to respond tonight.
