Jurgen Klopp | Career

Mainz 05

Klopp started his managerial career at Mainz 05, a team he had played for in the past. He took over the team’s charge mid-season in 2001 after retiring from professional football in 2000. Just after coming in as the new manager for Mainz, he showed his capabilities as a manager and saved the team from relegation by winning six of his seven games. In the following season (2001-02) which was his first full season in charge of Mainz 05, Klopp showed his signature pressing and counter-pressing tactics and dragged Mainz 05 to the top 5 slightly missing out on promotion.

The next season (2002–03), Klopp guided Mainz 05 to a fourth-place finish again and missed out on promotion because of a goal difference. After two seasons of failure in promotion, Klopp took his team to third place in the next season (2003–04) and finally got promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club’s history. In his first stint in the Bundesliga, Klopp’s Mainz finished 11th in the league and qualified for the UEFA Cup (2005–06), however, they were knocked out by Sevilla, who were the reigning champions.

In the following season (2006–07), Mainz 05 got relegated from the Bundesliga, but Klopp decided to stay loyal and remained with the club. However, when Mainz was unable to secure a promotion in the 2007–08 season, Klopp resigned as the manager of the team.

Borussia Dortmund

Following his exit from Mainz, Klopp was approached by Bundesliga giant Borussia Dortmund for a managerial position, while Bayern Munich also showed interest. Klopp accepted the offer from Dortmund and joined the longtime rivals of Bayern. Klopp initially signed a two-year contract with a club that had finished 13th in the Bundesliga under their previous manager. During his first year at the club, Klopp led a young Dortmund onto the path of becoming DFB-Supercup champions by defeating Bayern Munich.

In the years that followed, Klopp transformed the team from a lower-card one to a championship contender. Klopp’s Dortmund won the Bundesliga two times in a row in the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons. Additionally, in the 2011–12 season, Dortmund finished the season with 81 points, which was the highest ever score in the history of the Bundesliga. In 2012, Dortmund defeated Bayern in the DFB-Pokal Final which marked the first ever double title win in the history of Dortmund and it was all made possible because of Klopp’s tactical brilliance. During this time, Klopp also won the German Football Manager of the Year two times in a row.

In the following seasons after 2012, the performance of Dortmund went downhill, they finished second in the Bundesliga and lost the 2012 German Supercup. Klopp faced a monetary penalty because of his rude behavior with the referees in the 2013–14 season. The officials at Dortmund supported Klopp and maintained a stance of no penalty, but it didn’t work.

In the 2013–14 season, Dortmund again finished the league in second place, but this time they won the German Super Cup and even reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Klopp decided to go on a new adventure in 2015 and resigned from the German club.

Liverpool

In 2015, Jurgen Klopp was appointed as the manager of Premier League club Liverpool. Upon his arrival, he dubbed the Premier League side a special club and called him “the normal one” cleverly taking a dub at Jose Mourinho‘s “the special one” comment.

In 2016, Klopp’s Liverpool defeated Manchester United and secured a place in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League. They went on to defeat Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals and made their way to the finals by going past Villareal. However, they lost to Sevilla in the finals. After a successful campaign in 2016, Klopp signed a six-year extension with Liverpool in the same year. In the 2016–17 season, Liverpool was close to achieving their much-desired Premier League glory but ended up finishing in the fourth position. In 2018, Klopp guided Liverpool to their first-ever chance at European glory since 2007. Liverpool made it to the Champions League finals, however, much to the disappointment of the fans, Liverpool lost to Real Madrid 3-1.

After that loss, Liverpool and Klopp entered into arguably their best season yet Klopp made some defensive additions to the squad that paid off big time as Liverpool became the squad that conceded the least amount of goals that season. Klopp also received the Premier League Manager of the Month award in December. In the 2018-19 season, Liverpool went on to the Champions League finals against Tottenham Hotspur and achieved European glory, giving Klopp his first-ever Champions League title. In the following season (2019–20), Klopp and Liverpool won the Premier League with a record 99 points. At the end of the season, Klopp received the honors of Premier League Manager of the Season and LMA Manager of the Year.
