Manchester United will turn their attention to the EFL Cup when they host Derby County on Tuesday.
Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Wolverhampton Wanderers this past weekend, so Jose Mourinho would hope that his players bounce back and earn a win against the Rams to qualify for the next round of the EFL Cup.
The game against Derby provides Mourinho with a chance to start from the scratch and restore some positivity around the club.
Marcus Rashford and Nemanja Matic could be in line for a start after completing their respective suspensions.
Ander Herrera remains a doubt, while Marcos Rojo is still out injured.
Romero is United’s specialist goalkeeper in cup competitions. He has an impressive shot-stopping ability and is genuinely a solid goalkeeper.
Diogo Dalot could start as the right-back after putting in an exciting display against Young Boys last week.
Back from injury, Jones could start against Derby on Tuesday. He has to be at the top of his game to keep the opposition attackers at bay.
Bailly needs to get back his confidence after a disastrous outing against Brighton. This game could be important for him as the Ivorian needs to gain the manager’s trust once again.
At left-back, Ashley Young is expected to start. The veteran Englishman can be defensively uncertain at times but he is a real asset to the team when going forward.
Matic could come back into the starting XI after missing the game against Wolves due to suspension. His calming influence in the midfield would be important for United.
He is technically gifted and can control the distribution from the midfield. Pereira’s job will be to deliver penetrative passes through to the attacking players.
Fred scored his first United goal last weekend and will be confident of putting in another solid display. He will also be expected to do the dirty work in the middle of the park.
With several attacking options at Mourinho’s disposal, it comes as no surprise that Mata has been left out so far. Against an opponent like Derby County, he could be given a chance on the right wing.
Martial has all the potential to be a top-class forward but he hasn’t consistently delivered the goods for the Red Devils. The EFL Cup game could be a fantastic chance for the Frenchman to get back his confidence.
Leading Man United’s attack against Derby could be Marcus Rashford. He has the ability to be ruthless in front of the goal and this is a glorious chance for him to get on the scoresheet.
