Injuries, Harry Kane And Llorente – Decoding Tottenham Hotspur’s Struggles At Such A Crucial Stage

Over the last two seasons, Tottenham Hotspur were on the receiving end of criticism due to their inability to finish the season as title-winners. Both times, they were close and this season was supposed to be the one for them to aim and finally get their hands on the coveted Premier League trophy. And yet, their performances suggest that they are far from even getting close to winning the trophy.

In their last 4 games, Tottenham lost to Arsenal, won against Borussia Dortmund, drew with West Bromwich Albion and lost to Leicester City. This suggests that there is something wrong with their form and even though they managed to beat reigning European champions Real Madrid, Spurs seem to be struggling at home. Their next match is against Watford and that certainly will not be a walk in the park considering how strong Marco Silva’s men have been this season.

The problem is, one cannot pinpoint one aspect as to what is going wrong for Tottenham. They have quite a number of issues which are causing them to play poorly on the field and unfortunately for them, it is happening around the crucial time – the Christmas period. Here are 3 things that are going wrong for Mauricio Pochettino and his men at the club.

Injury crisis

Toby Alderweireld will not play until the New Year due to an injury he sustained against Real Madrid and his presence is sorely missed at the back. Victory Wanyama continues to be out since August due to a knee injury. In Alderweireld’s absence, Dier has been acting as a back-up but since Wanyama is also absent, Spurs are lacking a quality holding midfielder, since Wanyama’s physicality remains unmatched.

Harry Kane

To add to the list, Harry Winks was also out and he missed the defeat at Leicester. Mousa Dembele seems like a shadow of his former self, owing to a string of injuries. Danny Rose is back playing but he is still working on a full recovery. Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen are both enduring significant dips in form while Harry Kane is also suffering from a knee issue.

Over-dependence On Harry Kane

When Pep Guardiola made his infamous ‘Harry Kane team’ comment, little did he know it would blow up into such a huge controversy. As much as Spurs fans will hate to admit it, the truth is that they are too dependent on Kane to come out of sticky situations. He has been doing that so far but he is not a machine. It is clear that he is facing exhaustion and with the recent bout of injury, things could take a far more devastating turn for the club if he goes absent for a while.

Lack Of Impact From Summer Arrival Fernando Llorente

The main reason behind Pochettino purchasing Llorente in the summer was to reduce their dependency on Kane. And yet, the player has failed to live up to expectations. He does his job well but has that provided positive results? No.
Given the situation, Spurs are in need of quality attackers and there is a dearth of options in that area. barring Heung-Min Son and Llorente. Son has chipped in with whatever he could so far but Llorente is yet to make any sort of worthy contribution, so one cannot blame Pochettino for being so dependent on Kane.
