‘Inconsistent’ is the perfect word to describe Newcastle United this season. The Magpies under Rafael Benitez have performed a few miracles. Last season, it was finishing 10th in the Premier League table and this season, it’s beating Manchester City.
Both results came out of nowhere and it shows what Benitez can do with the right players. Yet, the fact that the Magpies flirted with the relegation zone for most of the season was a big surprise. While that changed with the arrival of Miguel Almiron, they are still not safe (mathematically).
If they beat Southampton and results elsewhere go their way, then they are safe. But the Saints are not pushovers and under Ralph Hasenhuttl, they’ve transformed into a relatively decent team. They are also fighting for relegation and sit two points behind Newcastle.
That will defintely play a part in the proceedings, as with just few games to go, it’s now or never for both sides.
Barring both Sean Longstaff and Florian Lejeune, manager Rafael Benitez has a fully fit squad at his disposal.
He is the first-choice man at the club and will start against the Saints, barring an injury.
The American’s athleticism and stamina makes him the perfect man to bomb up and down the right flank.
With Lejune out for the season and Paul Dummett finding his way back, the 27-year-old Schar should keep his place on the right-hand side.
Back from injury, Jamaal Lascelles has been an inconsistent perfomer all season and needs to step up.
Despite being a left-back, the 27-year-old has deputised in the absence of Florian Lejune and done relatively well.
With injuries elsewhere, the former Bournemouth man has been deputising as a left wing-back. Should continue to do so.
The arrival of Miguel Almiron has freed up Perez and taken the pressure off the Spaniard.
Among Rafa Benitez’s most consistent players since the turn of the year, Hayden should keep his place.
A very creative and hard-working player, the South Korean has played four out of the last five games. Should start this game.
The new man has been an injection of hope and direct running, which makes him one of the Magpies’ best signings this season.
