Predicted Manchester City line-up to face Burton in the EFL Cup
EFL Cup defending champions Manchester City will be aiming to go one step closer to retaining it when they meet Burton at the Etihad in the first leg of the semi-finals. After going through a wobbly patch during the festive period, the Cityzens are back in form, more so after beating Premier League leaders Liverpool on Thursday night.
Pep Guardiola rested some his stars for the FA Cup game and something similar could be on the cards as they seek to catch the Reds in an intense title race. City are up against a Burton side who are a surprise package. Hence, the onus is on the top-division team to take this tie by the scruff of the neck.
Fabian Delph is out of red card suspension now and should be available for selection. Benjamin Mendy and Claudio Bravo are long-term absentees.
Probable Manchester City XI
Manager: Pep Guardiola
Arijanet Muric (GK)
He has been the goalkeeper in this competition and should continue to be on Wednesday as well.
Kyle Walker played the FA Cup game, hence, we may see Danilo in action this midweek.
Nicolas Otamendi (CB)
The Argentine hasn’t been a regular in the league games this season, however, his experience in cup games could be key.
Aymeric Laporte (CB)
He didn’t feature in the FA Cup game and hence, could play a part on Wednesday.
Fabian Delph (LB)
He was suspended for the past three games after getting a red card against Leicester City. We may see him in action against Burton.
John Stones (CDM)
Fernandinho is expected to get a rest for this game, hence, it’s another chance for Stones to ply his trade in defensive midfield.
Phil Foden (LCM)
The youngster impressed during the FA Cup game and should get another opportunity to impress the manager.
Ilkay Gundogan (RCM)
Kevin de Bruyne started the previous game in this position and may get a rest for Wednesday as he recovers from a long-term injury. Gundogan could start here.
Riyad Mahrez (RW)
Raheem Sterling is expected to get a rest for this game and Mahrez should continue to start on the right wing.
Gabriel Jesus (ST)
The Brazilian’s performances in these types of games must be spot on to challenge Sergio Aguero for a place in the regular eleven.
Leroy Sane (LW)
The German came on for the last 30 minutes on Sunday and is expected to start ahead of Sterling in this game.
