Southampton vs Liverpool prediction: Liverpool line-up

Liverpool don’t have a lot of time on their hands to prepare for the Southampton game.

The Reds were busy in midweek as they lifted the UEFA Super Cup by beating Chelsea. However, that came at a price with the game being decided on penalties.

Neither manager would have wanted the extra 30 minutes after normal time, and it was Adrian who came up with the vital save to hand Jurgen Klopp another trophy.

The Reds faced a tough Southampton team last season too and needed late goals from Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson to win the three points.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team were surprisingly beaten 3-0 by Burnley in their first game of the season, and with the extra rest, they could be tricky opponents for the Reds.

Liverpool don’t have any new injury concerns apart from Fabinho picking up cramp in the win over the Blues.

The Brazilian should be fit for the clash on Saturday while Naby Keita will miss the clash.

Alisson is out for a while and Adrian is a doubt after picking up a freak injury during the celebrations.

Predicted Liverpool XI

Formation: 4-3-3

Manager: Jurgen Klopp

Andy Lonergan (GK)

Adrian came up big in the penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea but the Reds could see Lonergan start should the Spaniard not recover from his problem.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB)

Alexander-Arnold was brought on in the second half against the Blues as Gomez started as the right-back. The English youngster should return to the starting XI on Saturday and his crossing will be one of the weapons used by the Reds.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Joe Gomez (CB)

The tough decision Klopp has to make is regarding who pairs Virgil van Dijk at the back. Joel Matip’s passing was wayward against Chelsea, hence Gomez should be slotted next to the Dutch defender.

Virgil van Dijk (CB)

Van Dijk will have his hands full against an unpredictable Saints attack, and the Dutch centre-back needs to ensure Liverpool’s defence is tighter than it has been this season.

Andy Robertson (LB)

Robertson was subbed in the win over Chelsea but the Scot should start at St. Mary’s tomorrow.

Fabinho

Fabinho (CM)

The Brazilian dispatched his penalty without any problems despite suffering cramp against the Blues. However, Fabinho should be fit for the clash against the Saints.

Jordan Henderson (CM)

Liverpool’s captain should retain his place in the starting XI and will hope to put up a great performance on Saturday.

Georginio Wijnaldum (CM)

The Dutch midfielder didn’t start for the Reds on Wednesday but should be brought back into the XI to face Southampton.

Sadio Mane (LW)

Mane scored a brace in the win over Chelsea and the Senegal international should get his first Premier League start of the season on Saturday.

Roberto Firmino (ST)

The Brazilian’s introduction after half-time transformed Liverpool’s attack on Wednesday and he needs to start on Saturday if the Reds want to make light work of the Saints.

Mohamed Salah (RW)

Salah is a machine for the Reds and there is no reason for Klopp to drop his talisman on Saturday.
